A Day Trip To Mull

Our busy town of Oban is known as the ‘Gateway to the Isles’ and it couldn’t be more appropriate as it has amazing links to many of the west coast islands.

A day trip from Oban to the Isle of Mull is a popular excursion for many visitors and even the locals, as you can just hop on a ferry and embark on an island adventure. The Hebridean island is well known for its incredible landscape and is home to many of Scotland’s most iconic wildlife; including porpoises and basking sharks in the surrounding waters, and amazing birds and eagles that sweep across the skyline.

We’ve listed some of our favourite things to do in Mull including attractions like the colourful town of Tobermory and the Tobermory Distillery, along with other day trip activities to consider for your west coast bucket list.

Tobermory Attractions

There are many exciting attractions on the Isle of Mull and one of the most popular sights is the island’s bright harbour-front town of Tobermory. The historic port town is known for its vibrant appearance of different coloured buildings that grew popularity being the setting of the hit children’s show Balamory.

The port town, and Mull’s capital, is home to many local shops, restaurants and cafes enjoyed by tourists and locals. You’ll find amazing arts and crafts as well as eateries that are definitely worth the visit! Mull’s museum is packed with history and information about the island’s heritage and its people, while the Marine Visitor Centre showcases fascinating exhibitions about Mull’s past and present marinelife.

One of our favourite eateries to visit on the island lies right in the heart of Tobermory. Macgochans offers live music, local food and great craic! The restaurant and bar offers many different experiences all under the one roof. Their Restaurant Bar is great if you like to be wined and dined, or you can sit by the fire and enjoy some Scottish whisky in Bar-beag; and if you are blessed with sunny Scottish weather, the Beer Garden allows guests to enjoy drinks surrounded by the island’s beautiful landscape.

Tobermory Distillery

Visitors can take a guided tour of the Tobermory Distillery which crafts spirits that are inspired by the creativity of the locals and vibrant town, as well as the incredible island landscape and coastal location. Established in 1978, visitors can book a tour of the iconic distillery and even try the whisky and gin during an exciting tasting experience delivered by the distillery’s passionate team.

Beyond the capital of Tobermory lies the incredible landscape of the island. From beaches to munros, there is so much to see across the rest of the Hebridean isle.

Isle of Mull Beaches

The golden sands of the Isle of Mull beaches are often compared to the shores of the Mediterranean. Due to their paradise-like appearance, the island’s beaches are a popular attraction for many visitors on the island.

Looking out to the isles of Tiree and Coll, the picture-perfect bay of Calgary Beach is one of Mull’s most popular attractions. Visitors and their four-legged friends can take a sheltered stroll along the beach and even enjoy some treats from the popular local ice cream hut that looks over the bay.

Rain, hail, or shine, the beaches of Mull offer a stunning location for a refreshing walk in the Hebridean isles. Visit Calgary Beach, Kilvickeon Beach, Ardalanish and more!

Hiking on Isle of Mull

For those looking for an adrenaline-pumping adventure and spectacular views, the climb up Ben More on the south of the island is definitely worth the effort. This is the highest point of the island and Mull’s only munro. Those who reach the top are welcomed by incredible vistas that stretch from the Sound of Mull, Staffa and Ulva, all the way across to Iona in the distance. You might even come in contact with some of Mull’s incredible wildlife that inhabit the wild island!
